Finding My Inner Mac

18 Sep

Hello everybody out there! About two weeks ago, I bought my very first MacBook. It’s not much better than my old VAIO Z, hardware-wise. But man, can it work.
The OSX runs in about twenty seconds and the logon process takes about 5 seconds (compare it to a 95 second startup time on Windows 7).
After the initial confusion of finding my way around, everything was a piece of cake. After only three hours, I had said goodbye to my old VAIO Z. For nearly any application I had on my Windows, there is a – sometimes better – replacement for my Mac. More than that, I now have the luxury of enjoying a native Persian calendar, the lack of which I always felt on Windows

Everything looks perfect and elegant. At 2kg – about 500g heavier than Z – it’s just barely heavy enough to make me notice the weight.
What I have installed on the OS include:

  • calibre; to manage my eBooks and also to have something to work with my Nook. Also, the interface was familiar since I had used it on my Windows already. The real disappointment here, was that I couldn’t satisfactorily manage my eBooks’ collection with iTunes. I liked the interface very much, however I couldn’t get it to work with the Nook as well as I wanted to.
  • IntelliJ IDEA; currently my favorite IDE for developing anything, from C to enterprise Java applications.
  • MacJournal; the all powerful note-taking, document-organizing, blog client, etc. that I use right now. This post is written in MacJournal by the way. Up until this very moment, I think I like it.
  • Nambu; for tweeting madly day and night.
  • Firefox; my browser of choice for the moment, since I couldn’t find anything like Foxyproxy for Safari.
  • Skype; no comments here, I gather.
  • VLC; the awesome all purpose multimedia player. The only thing lacking a bit for me is the fuzziness of videos for my RMVB videos.
  • Vuze; the great, cross-platform Bittorrent client, written in Java.
  • Keka; the very cool compression utility capable of decompressing GZip, BZip, 7zip, RAR, etc., developed on top of 7zip.
  • JDiskReport; since I am a hard disk usage nerd. It provides me with excellent, detailed reports of exactly how I have used my hard disk.

Also, I have come to believe that Mac is all about integration. I am now enjoying a level of integration and cooperation of applications I never had experienced before. My iPhoto, Address Book, Mail, and Skype are inter-connected. I can sync my Nokia E52 mobile phone with my Mac as easily as I would take a look at it. And it’s just the beginning.
Well, I guess that’s all for now. Have a good time folks.

Windows 7 on My VAIO-Z

02 Apr

I finally succeeded in updating my VAIO Z530N OS to Windows 7. Yeah, it was a hard and lengthy process to get everything working just the way I wanted, but I did it.

I really think Sony e-Support should mention that if you want “Vaio Care” software to work correctly, you have to first update your BIOS.

But I really have to say that it was worth it. Seven is so much better than Vista in so many ways, that writing a comparison seems almost futile.

There are still many things to install, but I’ve got most of it underway. This time, I guess I won’t be installing Eclipse, since from the time I started using Intellij IDEA I’ve hardly ever opened it.

Also, I think I’ll need an SVN client, and also Apache Maven installed.

Well, that’s seems like it for today.

eyeOS 1.9

01 Jan

Today, I installed eyeOS 1.9 on my virtual host. It was more than good, in my opinion. However, the installation didn’t go as smoothly as I thought it would. I mean, the 1.8 worked better for me.

First, I had to uninstall and reinstall Kloxo, PHP, MySQL, Apache, and PEAR several times before getting them to work properly together. I know this wasn’t directly related to the eyeOS installation, but I had to do this because eyeOS (or rather, PHP) didn’t recognize the SQLite and MBString modules I had installed.

Then I had to surf the web for about one hour to find out that I couldn’t see any applications in the package manager, because the default repository address wasn’t working. So, I had to switch the repository to 1.7.

And besides everything, I still haven’t got the IMAP mail client to function properly.

I’ll post as soon as I get that problem solved.

Merry Christmas

26 Dec

A very merry Christmas to all those who read this. As I’m a Muslim, Christmas doesn’t hold much value for me, but, also, in a very coincidental way, this year, the start of Islamic Year which is the beginning of Muharram has come very close to the Christmas. However, as an Iranian, that date also doesn’t hold much value for me.

In Iran, it is Nowruz which we hold dear and celebrate. Nowruz, which literally means The New Day, is a time of celebration which starts by the first day of spring, namely, MArch 21st.

Well, I’m today here to say happy Christmas to all Christians all over the world.

My Technorati Claim

25 Dec

Okay, that was fast. Technorati evaluated my blog and told me to put this unique “claim ID” in a new post, to show that this blog is indeed where I write: “2RQ4XA7A32AX”

Now, I’m gonna see what’s next after pushing the big, old, “Verify Claim Token” button.

Technorati Membership

25 Dec

Technorati is a place in which you can share your blog with the world and make the world be aware of what you write. I was reading the MSDN Blogs feed and stumbled upon this blog by Seth Eliot, which mentioned becoming a member, and I thought why shouldn’t I also do that?

So, I started a user and filled in a new claim, and I’m currently waiting for them to give me further instructions after an evaluation of my blog.

Changing the host

22 Nov

Yesterday I decided to change my host. So, I bought a tiny 512MB account. This one has a cPanel installed, and they allow me to have custom “php.ini” files[1]. Also, in this cPanel I have access to the PEAR mod-installer module.

But, alas, I forgot to backup my images along with my posts, so, right now, none of my previous posts has any images.

I might be able to get around it once I go to my work. My hope is that since I’d viewed my blog from there, I might be able to extract the images from my cache.

Anyway, I also still haven’t launched the projects’ sub-domain, so right now, I don’t have anything.

But all in all, I’m pretty happy with my new host, as my blog seems to load a lot faster from their servers.

Projects’ Repository Launched

17 Nov

Okay, everybody. I am ready to publish my projects to the world, now. I have launched a projects’ website at http://projects.mmnaseri.ir/ on which a WordPress blog is installed.

This deed has multiple merits:

  • I can share my ideas and projects with all you guys out there who are better than me at doing things. This way, I can make sure that there are people who can see what I’m doing and who might be willing to help me along.
  • Many of those geeks surfing the web might stumble upon my stuff, and might find them interesting enough to get in touch with me. This, in itself, is great. I always like it when I make new friends who share at least a part of my interests.
  • I will have an online backup of all the stuff I find presentable enough to share with the public.
  • And most importantly, I can receive feedback on all the projects I am putting online. With this in mind, I will be as responsive to feedbacks as possible.

Projects’ Repository

16 Nov

I’m not yet quite sure, but I have been thinking over it for some time and I think I will be creating a repository for all my personal and public projects.

This has not only the benefit of giving other people to save some time by not reinventing the wheel, it also gives me the opportunity to have a backup of all the things I think are presentable enough to be put online.

I’m not sure yet, but the repository will be residing on a sub-domain of this same domain, something like projects.mmnaseri.ir, or maybe repo.mmnaseri.ir.

I’ll be thinking it over. As of now, I already have some projects which – while still either incomplete or in beta – are quite large enough to be put to some good use, by those who whish to enhance, rather than develop.
